A partial denture is essential

A removable partial denture is a dental appliance that replaces single or multiple missing natural teeth. It can be attached to teeth with clasps or it can be attached to teeth with crowns and precision attachments. Partial dentures can have a metal framework, resin base or they can be made with Valplast flexible resin.

A partial denture that fills in the space created by missing teeth is essential for many reasons. It can help you to chew food properly, improve speech, give you lip and cheek support, and prevent your remaining teeth from changing position by drifting into the surrounding spaces. Teeth that are out of position can damage the tissues in the mouth.

It is vital to restore the mouth to its original state.

Those individuals who currently wear a full upper denture and are missing some lower natural teeth would have great success using a lower partial denture. Upper dentures that are not supported properly by lower teeth can cause a host of problems. For these individuals, this may result in a poor fitting upper denture causing an increase in bone loss, tissue growth and ‘sore spots.’ A correctly fitted denture results when the fitting surfaces work together in perfect balance.

How long will it take to get used to wearing a partial denture?

For the first few weeks, your new partial denture may feel awkward or bulky. However, your mouth will eventually become accustomed to wearing it. Inserting and removing the denture will require some practice. Follow all instructions given by your denturist. Your denture should fit into place with relative ease. Never force the partial denture into position by biting down. This could bend or break the clasps. Over time, adjusting the partial denture may be necessary. As you age, your mouth naturally changes, which can affect the fit of the denture. Your bone and gum ridges can recede or shrink, resulting in a loose-fitting denture. Partial Dentures that do not fit properly should be adjusted by your denturist. Loose partial dentures can cause various problems, including sores or damage of the remaining natural teeth. See your denturist promptly if your partial denture becomes loose.
